During our recent visit to Staunton, Virginia, we knew we wanted to stay in a hotel that was within easy walking distance to most of the attractions in downtown Staunton. We booked a two-night stay at the Hotel 24 South after looking at the options in this historic city.
Let’s be honest, there are not a lot of hotel choices in Staunton’s downtown. So it didn’t take a lot of planning on our part! However, we are happy with our choice of the Hotel 24 South and want to let you know what to expect if you are planning a visit.
Hotel 24 South Property Tour
We loved the rocking chairs outside on the front porch of the hotel.
It is also convenient to be able to drive right up in front of the hotel to unload baggage and luggage and to drop off people.
Lobby
We were impressed by the nice big lobby inside the historic hotel. It was a great place to do some work, sit and people watch, or wait for your party.
The historical displays surrounding the lobby were interesting, too.
Tucked off of the lobby by the restaurant entrance was a nice complimentary coffee and tea bar available to hotel guests all day long.
There was also a small marketplace in this area to buy some foods.
Shakespeare Theater
Hotel 24 South is located in downtown Staunton, Virginia, directly next to The American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriar’s Playhouse where Shakespearian plays are performed year round. This is the absolute best location to stay if you are going to be attending a performance at the playhouse. You can easily walk back to the hotel after the performance.
In fact, we noticed that most of the people staying at the hotel all were leaving to attend that night’s performance around the same time. It clearly is one of the preferred places to spend the night in Staunton if you are going to the Blackfriar Playhouse.
You can easily step out the door and be in the heart of downtown Staunton.
Amenities
There is an indoor pool and exercise center at the hotel.
Parking
Parking is located in a parking garage that is attached to the hotel. You will actually need to take a separate elevator from the hotel lobby to get to the parking deck. Then transfer to another elevator to get to your hotel room. It’s a bit different.
The parking garage is also used by the city.
The Hotel 24 South was previously known as the Stonewall Jackson Hotel.
Room Tour and Review
Overall, we were happy with our room and would recommend it to others. We stayed in Room 423.
This property is an older property. While it has been refurbished, you can tell that there aren’t the fancy amenities or brand new furnishings that you might find in a chain hotel.
The two-queen bed room was perfect for us. The room was quite large and we had plenty of space.
The beds were among the most comfortable beds we have found in a hotel. They were awesome!

Outside the window you could see the side of the Shakespeare theater. It is that close to Hotel 24 South.
The bathroom was sufficient. It definitely had an older feel to it, but it was clean and tidy and the basics that you need.
Our one BIG complaint is that the bathtub floor was extremely slippery when taking a shower. I’m not sure if it is because of the soft water or something to do with the tub itself, but it was quite dangerous. If you are concerned, I’d recommend bringing a bath mat or asking the hotel if they have one for use.
Dining and Bar
If you like having a restaurant or bar inside your hotel, then you will be happy at the Hotel 24 South.
There is a dining room that serves breakfast. The dining room is large and bright and airy. The cost of the breakfast was not what we wanted to spend ($15 a person), so we walked across the street to the Reunion Bakery and had some homemade pastries that were amazing.
A lounge and bar are also located inside the lobby. It is very small, but there is lots of seating that is located adjacent to the lobby.
