1. Carl’s Frozen Custard

Carl’s Frozen Custard is our top choice for classic custard treats! 

This small business has been serving up classic flavors since 1947. It is a favorite with locals and a must see for tourists, so expect this quaint soft serve place to always be busy. 

They have the absolute best shakes, malts, and soft serve in the area. The ice cream is delicious, and the service is always friendly.

Fun Fact: Carl’s says they invented the famous Root Beer Float!

2. Abner B’s Ice Cream

Located in historic downtown, Abner B’s is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious treat while strolling by the shops!

This ice cream shop has been in business for over 40 years and is known for its unique flavors. During my latest visit, there was a honey orange blossom flavor and a mint cookies and cream flavor (shown in the photo) that was so good!

They have created more than 475 different flavors of ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt that rotate on the menu.

There are two locations in Fredericksburg, the first one in the heart of the tourist district and the second location is at Embrey Mill Town Center.

Fun Fact: The B stands for Butterfield!

3. Tilly’s Homemade Ice Cream

If you’re looking for a great scooped ice cream in Fredericksburg, Tilly’s is the place to go. This small business is located just outside of downtown and offers some of the best sundaes around.

It’s a little expensive but worth it.  They have 24 rotating flavors and 14 classic flavors.

They even have gluten-free and vegan ice cream options.

4. Freddy’s

Freddy’s is a frozen custard and steakburger restaurant that offers burgers and a variety of other food options. I really enjoy their burgers, they are always cooked to perfection and taste great.

In addition, Freddy’s serves some of the best custard in Fredericksburg. They have a wide variety of flavors to choose from, and their frozen yogurt is also delicious.

Yes, it is a chain restaurant, but if you’re looking for a great place to eat, Freddy’s is definitely worth checking out! There are multiple locations in Virginia, and the United States, so find one that is convenient for you!

5. Blue Cow Ice Cream Co.

If you’re looking for a unique, classic ice cream flavors made in small batches, Blue Cow Ice Cream Company is the place to go!

This small batch company creates all of its own ice cream in their Roanoke kitchen, and it’s always fresh and delicious.

Our favorite flavor is the Chocolate Cayenne which is both sweet and spicy! However they have a variety of seasonal offerings that are always changing.

6. Jimmy T’s Soft Serve

Jimmy T’s Soft Serve is a great place to go for a sweet tooth! The shop offers different flavors of soft serve such as chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, banana and a lot more.

They have super friendly staff and  the service is always quick. The ice cream is great too- it’s soft and creamy, and the portion sizes are generous. I definitely recommend checking out Jimmy T’s Soft Serve if you’re ever in the area!
