1. Beaverdam Reservoir
If you’re looking for a nearby hike to get your heart rate up, look no further than Beaverdam Reservoir. This 15-minute hike loops around the 350-acre dam-fed reservoir. Keep an eye out for swimming restrictions – this is a popular spot in the summer!
This moderate hike isn’t too challenging, but it’s perfect if you’re looking for something that will get your heart rate up. The hike begins from the National Recreation & Park Association parking lot and takes you on a loop around the 54 acre Beaverdam Reservoir. Make sure to keep an eye out for swimming restrictions – this is a popular spot during the summer!
2. Cool Spring Battlefield
If you’re looking for a quick and easy hike that is also historically significant, then Cool Spring Battlefield is the perfect option for you. This hike takes you through a former Civil War battlefield and golf course, so you can learn about American history while enjoying some beautiful scenery. The terrain is mostly flat, making it easy to walk on, and there are loops available if you want to make it a longer hike.
The Battlefield Park has a 710 mile long trail system with seven different trails at varying lengths and levels of detail. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore all of them!
3. Bears Den Overlook
Bears Den Overlook is a beautiful stop on the Appalachian Trail, and it’s only about a .3 mile walk from the parking lot. The trail can be tricky along rocky terrain, but you’ll reach scenic views in no time!
The overlook is located close to the Stone Gables Bed & Breakfast, as well as several other trails including Raven’s Rock and Snickers Gap. If you’re looking for an easy hike with plenty of scenic views, Bears Den Overlook is definitely worth checking out.
4. Raven Rocks
The hike to Raven Rocks is a bit more difficult than some of the other options, but it’s well worth it for the incredible views you’ll get of the surrounding countryside. This hike gains more than 1,500 feet in elevation, making it a good challenge for experienced hikers. The trail is rocky so be prepared for a bit of scrambling as you go. You may also bump into thru-hikers at any point along the hike, depending on when you go there.

5. Ball’s Bluff Battlefield
Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park is located in Leesburg, Virginia. The park contains seven trails and tours that discuss the Battle of Ball’s Bluff which took place on October 21, 1861. This was the first battle in Loudoun County during the Civil War.
The park offers great opportunities to explore and learn about this significant event in history. There are signs along the trail with information about the battle and the park also provides a guide that highlights hidden gems in Northern Virginia. 6. Red Rock Overlook
If you’re looking for a great hiking trail near Leesburg, Virginia, Red Rock Overlook is definitely worth checking out. This hike has great views, is short and easy, and offers a variety of habitats. The hike starts with a steep climb followed by an easier descent before returning to the beginning point.
Red Rock Wilderness Overlook provides a scenic view of the Potomac River and is home to historic buildings. The park offers 60+ acres of trails for exploration and is only 1.2 miles from downtown Leesburg. There are ruins and buildings from the late 1800’s at Red Rock Overlook that make this spot especially interesting to check out. Plus, it’s only 10 minutes away from Leesburg!
