Writer’s Guidelines

Do you live in Virginia or West Virginia or travel to the area often? If so, we would love to work with you!

HistoricVirginiaTravel.com works with travel writers and travel bloggers that can share their personal experiences of visiting either Virginia or West Virginia. We are especially interested in topics such as:

  • Best Things to Do in an Area
  • Self-Guided Walking Tours of a City
  • Best Restaurants in a City or Geographic Area
  • Best Hotels in a City
  • One-day, two-day, three-day or weekend itineraries for a destination
  • Road Trip Itineraries
  • Hotel Reviews
  • Attraction Reviews
  • Winter Guides to a City or Region
  • Day Trip Guides from a Major City in Virginia, West Virginia or Washington D.C.
  • Local’s Guides

We offer two ways to work with your state travel guide:

  • Syndicating your existing Virginia travel blog on our website. This means that we can use your existing article in its entirety, with your personal photos, in exchange for a do-follow canonical link back to your website. (If you don’t understand what this is, then we probably don’t want to work together.) You will retain the rights to your article and your article will remain on your website, in addition to ours.
  • Write a unique blog post for our website on a topic that we discuss and agree upon. After acceptance of the articles and original photos, we will pay $75.

We DO NOT accept pre-written content used for marketing purposes for any destination, attraction, hotel, restaurant, etc. We WILL NOT publish your promotional content, even when you offer payment. Just don’t ask, because you won’t get a response.

Interested in working with HistoricVirginiaTravel.com? Here are our Style Guidelines.

  • Blogs should be at least 1,200 words long (preferably longer).
  • No AI writing is accepted.
  • While we do want to have your own personal twist on a destination, the article is not all about you or your family. The most important aspect is to share helpful and detailed travel information for other travelers who want to go to that destination or location. Please do add some personal anecdotes and stories if it fits with the article.
  • Include links to the major attractions, hotels, restaurants, etc. that are mentioned in the article. These links should go to the official website of the business.
  • Original photos in sizes suitable for our site are required. We will not use stock photos unless absolutely necessary.
  • Submit your guest blog post as a Word document. Photos should be separate JPG file attachments.
  • Blogs should be written in the first person. Our readers want to know why you liked – or disliked – a destination or experience in Virginia. Anyone can read marketing fluff. We want to know your story.
  • Share specific tips and tricks that you discovered during your travels, such as how to save money at an attraction, what the best menu item is at a restaurant, etc.
  • We usually make roundup posts and listicles of the best things to see, do or eat in a destination. However, styles can change if warranted for the article.
  • Look at some recent articles for examples of our style.
  • Write a brief bio about yourself and your website (if any) to link to at the end of the article.
  • If possible, please add a link to www. HistoricVirginiaTravel.com as an outlet where your work has appeared. We love it when you share your writing with your community!
  • We may be able to provide an assignment letters to travel writers who are working with us. Assignment letters for press trips, complimentary admissions, hotel stays or meals must be discussed with us before arranging anything with the destination.
  • The editors of HistoricVirginiaTravel.com reserve the right to edit any and all content submissions for length, tone, voice and factual accuracy to bring the content in line with our standards and editorial guidelines. We retain the exclusive right to content we publish as it it edited and formatted for HistoricVirginiaTravel.com. If you are syndicating content to us from your own website, you own your original rights to the content, however we own the rights to content as it has been edited to be published on our site.
  • HistoricVirginiaTravel.com reserves the right to resize, crop or otherwise edit photos or other images submitted to us as long as those alterations don’t substantially alter the content, purpose or intent of the image. We retain the non-exclusive right to use images submitted to us. If your family or friends are in travel photos submitted with your article, we have the non-exclusive right to use images even if a model release has not been submitted.
